Week 2 – w/c 12th Oct

Hi year 2s – I hope you had a nice weekend. This week you will continue with your personal 2D Making & Unmaking project choosing between a fashion illustration, painting or mixed media print collage brief. All three briefs require you to follow the design cycle and all three briefs ask you to incorporate some form of recycled/ scrap materials in your art work so I hope you have already started to collect some materials you could use in your experiments and final outcomes! By now you should have completed your two research tasks – secondary artist research & primary research. In Friday’s 2D sessions you will focus on starting your initial designs. Remember to keep referring back to your brief – all the tasks are on there, and if you have any questions or need any further guidance, please do come and see me!

On Tuesday you will look through and review merit/ distinction examples of past students FMP blogs to help you inspire you with with your own blogs and practical work in year 2, especially those of you aiming for high grades.

Next Tuesday 20th October you will be visiting The Design Museum to gather general primary research for project 1. On the day you will be given a series of photography & drawing tasks to complete whilst at the museum. You should bring a small sketchbook, pencils, colour pencils and a pen. Remember to charge your phone as we will be asking you to take photographs. If you have not already done so, please return your parent/ self permission slip by the end of this week, otherwise you will not be allowed to go on the trip and your coursework will suffer as a result. Meet in B539 (Animation room) at 9.15am on the day. We will return to college at 4pm. Please see details in letter below.

Before the trip you will also be set an employer mini competition brief by Upstart – a branding agency, which will run over two days in college later on in the week/ after half term. You will then go on to pitch your designs to them.

In Lesson Tasks – Friday’s 2D Sessions

Initial Designs

Option 1 – Fashion Illustration inspired by Marine Serre using recycled & waste materials and scrap fabrics

• Look at the clothing designs by Marine Serre and other sustainable designers
• Working from these designs, from your mood boards, and primary & secondary research, create 4 -5 x quick fashion illustration ideas through sketches
• Include different silhouettes, garments, colours and combinations of recycled
  materials
• Aim for variety of designs rather than making every design similar
• You may use body templates to help you
• These only need to be drawings of the front of the garments
• They can be in black & white – you do not need to add colour but please add colour swatches
• Add annotations too

Option 2 – Fine Art Cardboard Painting inspired by Andrea Bowers using recycled cardboard, paints and pastels

• Look at the art work of Andrea Bowers – particularly her paintings using recycled materials/ cardboard
• Working from these pieces and from your primary & secondary research, create 3 – 4 x quick composition ideas through sketches
• Base them on social or environmental issues/ themes which mean something to you
• Try different arrangements of cardboard, imagery, colour, text and drawing
• Try exploring different themes at this stage
• Add annotations too

Option 3 – Mixed Media Print Collage inspired by Kurt Schwitters using printmaking techniques and found & recycled objects

• Look at the work of Kurt Schwitters and famous printmakers such as Max Ernst
• Working from these pieces and from your primary & secondary research, create 3 – 4 x small collage and print composition ideas through pencil sketches
• Try combining your own drawings, ideas of planned prints and some found materials
• Think about where printed patterns, textures and repeated imagery could appear
• Add annotations too

Week 1 – w/c 5^th Oct

This week we will start Project 1 – Making & Unmaking. Throughout this project, you will explore how the processes of making, unmaking and remaking can become part of your creative practice. You will be encouraged to question conventional ideas about what art can be made from, what it can be made on, and when an artwork can be considered complete. You might transform old artwork into something new, deconstruct and reconstruct everyday objects, work with discarded or recycled materials, or experiment with unusual surfaces and found objects.

In 2D you will use the design cycle to explore and express the theme of Making & Unmaking in your own unique and personal ways. Working independently, will have the choice to work in fashion illustration, fine art painting or mixed media print collage. Before doing so, in your blog workshop you will complete the preliminary task of creating mood boards, mind maps and researching a personal artist within your specialism and creating a small scale quick response inspired by their work. We will also recap the design cycle so that you are ready to begin your 2D project.

Tuesday’s Blog Workshop – Continue with Project 1 Preliminary Tasks

1. Create a mind map (by hand or digitally) exploring the theme ‘Making & Unmaking’
2. Create a mood board (by hand or digitally) exploring the theme ‘Making & Unmaking’
3. Find an artist within your specialism which explores the theme ‘Making & Unmaking’.  Research them and analyse 2 pieces of their work. Then, create small scale response piece inspired by their work and techniques!
